JENNI RUUD
Hi! I'm Jenni and I'm honored to be running as a part of the LU Race Team! I've been part of the LU Crew since July of 2012 and love volunteering as a part of the Crew at events and behind the scenes. I am inspired by the Movement because it is aligned with my life values. I am passionate about helping others and do all that I can to that end. I am a proud mother of three and completed my first triathlon last June and my first half marathon in September. I am very excited to have teamed up with my daughter Lily to run on the LU Race Team this year.
My name is Lily Glackin and I have Trichotillomania (Trich). Trich is a neurobiological disorder which causes someone to pull all of their hair out. Trich is not caused by depression and it isn’t a compulsive disorder either. In fact, experts aren’t really sure what even causes it. Since doctors don’t understand what causes Trich, there is no ‘across the board’ treatment. Treatment is highly individualized. So, my mom Jenni and I have teamed up to raise awareness about Trich and to raise funds for TLC - TRICHOTILLOMANIA LEARNING CENTER – a group that has helped me quite a bit. It is very easy for someone suffering from Trich to feel ashamed, isolated and alone. I want to help other people with Trich feel proud of whom they are and to break the stigma of this poorly misunderstood disorder.
Trich affects about 1-2 people out of 50. It is a complex neurological-behavioral disorder, and not something children "can just stop doing." Lily has suffered from this disorder since 2nd grade and is now in 7th grade. It started out by her pulling her eyelashes and eyebrows but the last two years have mainly been on her scalp. It was very scary and heartbreaking to see my daughter doing this to herself. Frankly, I had no clue how to help her. Then we joined TLC out of Santa Cruz, CA. We went to our first TLC conference in April of 2012. TLC has helped Lily develop coping skills to deal with her Trich and has shown her that she is not alone. We continue to receive support and knowledge from TLC and in 2013 we are traveling to New Jersey for this year’s annual TLC conference. It really is an amazing group.
We live in a society that places so much on outward appearance. Through TLC and LIVEUNCOMMON we are trying to break that stigma and raise awareness. We are excited to be the catalyst in making a difference for all those affected by Trich. LIVE UNCOMMON says it well - it only takes ONE to change the world....I, and YOU, can be the ONE!
